Entitled Cheap Spirits, this exhibition by Singapore-based photographer George Wong and Singaporean painter Yeo Tze Yang comprises nine black-and-white photographs and seven oil paintings.
The works are said to celebrate the mundane by revealing the crude and sublime moments of everyday existence. The pairing of Wong’s photographs and Yeo’s paintings is touted to encourage a dialogue between the two visual art practitioners who differ in their media, generation and socio-economic background.
According to a press release by the gallery, Wong’s photographs capture moments of ecstatic release. He prompts the audience to question whether the subjects’ momentary state of ecstasy masks something sinister that is lurking in the background.
Yeo’s paintings denote the marks impacted by human activities and the notion of exhaustion that comes from meeting the needs of daily life.
Wong and Yeo’s combined body of work reflect that the sublime can be found in ordinary places and moments by developing a sense of renewed sensitivity for everyday objects and spaces.
