Cheap Spirits

Joint exhibition between George Wong and Yeo Tze Yang

OUR ArtProjects, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
19 May - 8 June 2018

Comprising nine black-and-white photographs and seven oil paintings, Cheap Spirits pairs the work of photographer George Wong and painter Yeo Tze Yang. The exhibition functions as a comparative study of how different generations and artistic media document the mundane.

Wong’s photographic lens captures volatile moments of ecstatic release, testing the thin line between collective euphoria and an underlying, latent unease. Yeo’s canvases counter this immediacy with a slower, painterly recording of human absence, documenting the physical marks, discarded objects, and sense of exhaustion left behind by the demands of working-class daily life.

By placing the snapshot against the labor of the canvas, the exhibition uncovers the complex psychological and structural currents running through ordinary spaces.
